Obituary - funeral service card.
Nora E. Hemphill, a resident of Independence for the past seven years and formerly of Linn County, passed away at 9:30 A.M. Monday, May 2, 1966 at the Peoples Hospital in Independence, Iowa. She was born the daughter of Wilson and Marian Chesebro Jones on December 15, 1886 near Grand Island, Nebraska. She moved to Linn County in a covered wagon with her parents when she was a little girl. On April 17, 1904, she was married to Charles Hemphill at Lafayette, Iowa. Mr. Hemphill passed away on October 13, 1948. Mrs. Hemphill was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ardell (Mildred) Bird of Winthrop and Mrs. Ray (Fern) Forsyth of Independence; three sons, Harold, Gerald and Donald Hemphill of Walker; a sister, Mrs. James (Daisy) Elliott of Center Point; two brothers, Whit Jones of Center Point and Wilmer Jones of Cedar Rapids; twenty-five grandchildren and forty-two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Clifford.
Services; 2 P.M. Thursday, May 5, 1966 at the First Methodist Church of Walker, Iowa. Conducted by: Revl Clyde Scott. Music: Mrs. Richard McMillen and Mrs. LaVerna Jones. Bearers: Charles Hemphill, Carl Hemphill, James Hemphill, Dale Hemphill, Raymond Forsyth and Wayne Bird. Interment: Lafayette Cemetery.

Favorite Memories of Nora by her granddaughter, Marian Terry
She used to write to all the boys who were in the Service in Walker, and surrounding communities even though she was crippled she was diligent.
Used to have Rev. Scott from the Methodist Church, and the whole church meeting at her house so she could be involved. Had refreshments and so she had more social contact.
She'd cry and rub her knees from the pain of rheumatoid arthritis.
She used long silverware to eat with and somethings she had to be fed.
She loved to sew and made quilts and rugs. Sit for hours tearing up material for rugs and sew them together and roll into big balls for someone to work together. Even though she couldn't walk she kept herself busy serving others and LOVED to have family come.
Neighbors would visit and kept her happy since she wasn't able to get out. A very loving Grandma.
She crocheted even with crippled hands. She was pretty happy with anything put in front Grandma go potty and she was afraid of the responsibility of that small of a baby and Grandma Nora.
She was really active for what she couldn't do.
